Debt, financial hardship, and the challenges of daily living can weigh heavily on a believer’s heart. Islam provides guidance and supplications (duas) to seek Allah’s help, protection, and blessings in our provision and livelihood. In this article, we explore five authentic and powerful duas from the Sunnah that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught to his companions. These supplications cover seeking lawful sustenance, protection from poverty, relief from debt, and divine mercy. Reciting them with sincerity can bring peace of mind and Allah’s abundant provision into your life.
Settling a debt Prophetic Sunnah Dua
اللهم اكفني بحلالك عن حرامك، وأغنني بفضلك عمن سواك
Allahumm-akfini bihalalika ‘an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika ‘amman siwaka.
O Allah! Grant me enough of what You make lawful so that I may dispense with what You make unlawful, and enable me by Your Grace to dispense with all but You.
'Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
A slave who had made a contract with his master to pay for his freedom, came to me and said: "I am unable to fulfill my obligation, so help me." He said to him: "Shall I not teach you a supplication which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me? It will surely prove so effective that if you have a debt as large as a huge mountain, Allah will surely pay it for you. Say:
'Allahumm-akfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwaka
(O Allah! Grant me enough of what You make lawful so that I may dispense with what You make unlawful, and enable me by Your Grace to dispense with all but You)."

Prophetic Dua For Settling a Debt, Anxiety and Sorrow
Allahumma inni auzu bika minal hammi wal hazan, wa auzu bika minal ajzi wal kasal, wa auzu bika minal jubni wal bukhli, wa auzu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from care and grief, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity and slackness, I seek refuge in Thee from cowardice and niggardliness, and I seek in Thee from being overcome by debt and being put in subjection by men.
Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri:
One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered the mosque. He saw there a man from the Ansar called AbuUmamah.
He said: What is the matter that I am seeing you sitting in the mosque when there is no time of prayer?
He said: I am entangled in cares and debts, Messenger of Allah.
He replied: Shall I not teach you words by which, when you say them, Allah will remove your care, and settle your debt?
He said: Why not, Messenger of Allah?
He said: Say in the morning and evening: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from care and grief, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity and slackness, I seek refuge in Thee from cowardice and niggardliness, and I seek in Thee from being overcome by debt and being put in subjection by men."
He said: When I did that Allah removed my care and settled my debt.

O Allah! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will. You grant honour to whom You will and disgrace whom You will. In Your Hand is all good. Verily, You are able to do all things. [O] Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, You grant them to whomsoever You wish and You deprive whomsoever You wish. Shower upon me such mercy, which will make me independent from the mercy of those besides You.’
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Muʿadh:
“Shall I not teach you a supplication which, if you were to have a debt as great as a mountain, Allah would pay it off for you? Say: O Muʿadh!
Shower upon me such mercy, which will make me independent from the mercy of those besides You.”
